HEAT PUMP DESIGN

Manual J & Heat Pump Sizing

Before claiming a heat pump rebate, make sure the system is sized correctly. Manual J load calculations are the foundation of any successful heat pump install.

Why Sizing Matters More for Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are far less forgiving than traditional furnaces and ACs. Oversizing a heat pump leads to short-cycling, poor humidity control, and reduced cold-weather performance — the opposite of what the rebate is trying to reward.

A proper Manual J load calculation, paired with Manual S equipment selection, gives you a defensible basis for choosing capacity and balance point — and supports rebate documentation when programs require it.

Common Pitfalls

Replacing tonnage like-for-like, assuming the old system was correct, skipping infiltration or duct loss analysis, or treating cold-climate ratings as design loads — all of these undermine both performance and rebate value.
