Buying Guide

Buy the install. The equipment is the easy part.

Two contractors quoting the same equipment can deliver completely different systems. The install — design, sizing, ducts, commissioning — is what you're really paying for.

Compare bids on what actually matters

  • Was a Manual J load calculation performed?
  • How was the equipment selected against that load?
  • Will the existing duct system be evaluated?
  • What does the commissioning process include?
  • What documentation will you receive?

Red flags

  • 'Same size as what's there now' with no calculation
  • Equipment recommendation given before they've looked at the house
  • No conversation about ductwork, returns, or static pressure
  • Pressure to decide today

Use the bid as leverage

Most homeowners use multiple bids to negotiate price. The bigger win is using them to negotiate quality — better sizing, better duct work, and a documentation trail you can use for rebates and resale.
