What This Page Covers

Federal HVAC tax credits change periodically based on legislation, equipment efficiency tiers, and IRS guidance. This page is informational only — confirm current credit amounts, eligible equipment, and filing requirements with a qualified tax professional and the IRS.

Federal credits commonly apply to qualifying heat pumps, heat pump water heaters, and certain high-efficiency furnaces, ACs, and boilers. Equipment must typically meet specific efficiency criteria and be properly installed in an eligible primary residence.

Why Sizing Still Matters

A federal tax credit improves the economics of a heat pump, but it does not protect comfort or performance. An oversized or undersized system will short-cycle, struggle in extreme weather, and waste the efficiency gains the credit was designed to encourage. Manual J load calculations remain the foundation of a good install.
